What Size Rug for a Living Room? A Simple Guide

Short answer: most living rooms need an 8x10 ft rug. Small living rooms often suit a 5x8 or 6x9 ft rug; large or open-plan rooms usually need 9x12 ft or bigger. The rug should be big enough for at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs to sit on it.

Three layout rules

1. All legs on (most luxurious)

Every leg of the sofa and chairs sits on the rug. Leave 12–18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls. Usually needs a 9x12 ft rug or larger.

2. Front legs on (most popular)

Only the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug. This ties the seating together and works in almost every room. Usually an 8x10 ft rug.

3. Floating rug (small rooms)

The rug sits in front of the sofa under the coffee table, with no furniture on it. It should still be at least as wide as the sofa minus a few inches on each side. Usually 5x8 or 6x9 ft.

Common mistakes

  • Too small: a rug that floats in the middle with no furniture touching it makes a room look smaller.
  • Narrower than the sofa: the rug should be close to the sofa's width or wider.
  • Hugging the walls: leave a border of floor showing so the room feels balanced.

Quick tip

Mark the rug outline with painter's tape before you buy. Walk around it for a day to check it feels right.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 5x8 rug too small for a living room?

For most living rooms, yes. A 5x8 works in small rooms or as a floating rug under a coffee table, but an 8x10 usually looks more balanced.

Should a living room rug go under the sofa?

Ideally at least the front legs should sit on it. This anchors the seating area and keeps the rug from sliding.

What rug material is best for a living room?

Wool is the most practical choice for busy living rooms: it is durable, warm and easy to care for. Silk suits formal, lower-traffic living rooms. See Silk vs Wool Rugs.
